Bird kindly: ethics basics

The bird comes first. If your presence changes what a bird is doing, you are too close.

The basics

The American Birding Association publishes a full Code of Birding Ethics that most clubs follow.

Questions people ask

How close is too close to a bird?

If the bird changes its behavior, such as stopping feeding, calling in alarm, staring at you or flying off, you are too close. Back away.

Is it OK to play bird calls to attract birds?

Use playback sparingly, if at all, and avoid it during nesting season and for rare or stressed birds.

Should I share where I saw a rare bird or a nest?

Be cautious. Sharing exact locations of nests, owl roosts or sensitive species can draw crowds that disturb them.
